High Tea Café

High Tea: fine english tea culture at kloster Bentlage

“High tea” is what the English call an afternoon meal that is bigger than 5 o’clock tea but smaller than dinner in the evening.

It is said that this tradition goes back to Anna, Seventh Duchess of Bedford (1783-1857). One day the duchess decided that the time between lunch and dinner was too long to be enjoyed without some further sustenance. And so the noble lady directed her servants to serve tea with light snacks. She liked the result so much that this extended afternoon tea was served every day. Friends adopted the custom and the ritual quickly spread throughout the country. So the special thing about high tea is not only the tea itself but just as much the accompanying snacks. The selection usually includes small, fine sandwiches, little cakes, pastries and all kinds of sweets.

This tea culture has recently been gaining a lot of fans in Münsterland as well. So under the management of Marianne Bernink the “High Tea Café” in Kloster Bentlage now offers fine and tasty fare in the aforementioned English tradition. Of course, besides “high tea” the menu of the café also includes home-baked cakes and coffee specialities. Those in search of something more hearty should try the home-made monastery soup, the hearty Westphalian “Vesperplatte” or one of the numerous special beers. Organic produce are used in preparing the dishes when possible. Coffee and tea are also offered optionally in fair-trade variants.

And so the new “High Tea Café” fits in harmoniously with the concept of Kloster Bentlage as a cultural site and offers guests a comfortable ambience and quality fare – best enjoyed before or after an exhibition or museum visit.
