Support & participation

With great motivation and commitment, the friends and sponsors of Kloster Bentlage and Saline Gottesgabe help to preserve these heritage buildings.

An overview of the voluntary Bentlage organizations:

Förderverein Kloster/Schloss Bentlage (Friends’ Association for Kloster/Schloss Bentlage)

The friends’ association Förderverein Kloster/Schloss Bentlage was founded in 1983 with the goal of providing both non-material and material support for the restoration, upkeep and cultural use of the complex and the surrounding historical cultural landscape. In 1998 the friends’ association founded the Bentlage Print Society, which now enjoys a national and international reputation, and in 2000 the Foundation for Support of Kloster Bentlage.

Every year a series of events are organized by the friends’ association or take place with its assistance:

  • exhibitions
  • jazz festival
  • art workshops
  • art journeys
  • Advent readings

The friends’ association regards the strengthening of the financial base of the foundation by acquiring sponsors and donors as one of its priority tasks. Participation in the planning and realization of the tasks of the friends’ association, possibly also as a member, is a wonderful way of experiencing Bentlage more intensively. Förderverein Saline Gottesgabe (Friends’ Association for Saline Gottesgabe)

The friends’ association Verein zur Förderung der Saline Gottesgabe e.V. was founded on 29.04.2010 in a constituent meeting of leading citizens of Rheine. The main goal of the friends’ association is to care for and preserve the salt works with its two functioning thorn house sections, the salt boiling house and the other preserved buildings as heritage buildings. Besides the maintenance of the historic buildings, the association aims to encourage research on the special qualities of Saline Gottesgabe with respect to comparable European aspects. Another important aim of the friends’ association is to present the historical processes of salt extraction, production and processing by means of a transportable demonstration boiling pan. The goal here is to make people more aware not only of the life-sustaining theme of salt but also of the value of the historically important, pre-industrial monument in Rheine Bentlage and to further raise the transregional profile of Saline Gottesgabe.

Stiftung zur Förderung von Kloster Bentlage (Foundation for Support of Kloster Bentlage)

The notion of donorship has a long tradition in Bentlage. In the period between the foundation of the monastery in 1437 and its dissolution in 1803, well over 300 people were included in the register of benefactors. This tradition was revived by Förderverein Kloster / Schloss Bentlage in 1999 and in 2000 it led to the creation of our current support foundation. Donors take on co-responsibility and thus, through their civic involvement, help to preserve this centuries-old monastery with its cultural and spiritual significance.

The foundation achieves its goal by supporting the maintenance, upkeep and use of the complete historical complex of Kloster Bentlage in its cultural landscape and by promoting the cultural and academic use of the complex in Rheine. This is done by organizing its own events, supporting events by partners, promoting research, supporting artists who work there and/or exhibit works and by offering prizes. The foundation pursues objectives that are solely and immediately for the public benefit and currently has an endowment capital of over half a million euros.
